Since arriving in the U.S. in 1980 from his native country Brazil, Cyro Baptista has emerged as one of the premier percussionists in the country. Coinciding with the rise in the public’s interest of world music, Cyro has managed to record and tour with some of music’s most popular names. His mastery of Brazilian percussion and the many instruments he creates himself, have catapulted him into world renown. With his own project, the percussion and dance ensemble known as 'Beat the Donkey' Cyro gives free reign to his imagination, mixing his tremendous musical skills, his natural humor and theatrical ways with instruments from Brazil, Middle East, Indonesia, Africa and US.

Cyro's credits read like a "Who’s Who" of modern music. He toured extensively with Yo-Yo Ma's Brazil Project, Trey Anastasio's Band (of Phish), John Zorn's Electric Masada, Herbie Hancock's Grammy award winning "Gershwin’s World" , Sting and Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints". The wide range of artists Cyro Baptista has performed and recorded with include: David Byrne, Kathleen Battle, Gato Barbieri, Dr. John, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Palmer, Melissa Etheridge, Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Michael Tilson Thomas, Daniel Barenboin, Bobby McFerrin, Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo-Ma, Medeski Martin & Wood, Spyro Gyra, Trey Anastasio from Phish, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Santana and Sting. He has also played with many respected Brazilian artists such as Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Marisa Monte, and Nana Vasconcelos.

Cyro has performed on five Grammy award winning albums: Yo-Yo-Ma’s "Obrigado Brasil", Cassandra Wilson's "Blue Light 'Til Dawn", The Chieftains' "Santiago", Ivan Lins' "A Love Affair", and Herbie Hancockæs highly-acclaimed "Gershwin's World". A documentary on Cyro's main project, Beat the Donkey, was recorded for the prestigious WGBH-TV Boston program 'La Plaza' won 3 New England EMMY Awards in 2002, and continues to air on PBS stations nationwide. Cyro collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for a Brazilian Carnaval modern jazz concert.

Artists

Wicked Knee
Billy Martin (drums)
Curtis Fowlkes (trombone)
Marcus Rojas (tuba)
Steven Bernstein (trumpet)

“I like to think of it as a juke joint band, if there is such a thing,” says Billy Martin about his new quartet, Wicked Knee. To which we can only respond, well, if there wasn’t one, there is now.

Martin, for the past two decades the drummer of the genre-busting trio Medeski Martin & Wood, wanted his new project to be something completely different from what his fans are accustomed to hearing from him. With a lineup consisting solely of trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, tuba player Marcus Rojas, trumpeter Steven Bernstein and Martin serving as his own rhythm section, comparisons to anything that have come before are unlikely. Martin calls Wicked Knee “ragtime funk,” and one listen to the band’s debut self-titled six-song (plus bonus track) EP confirms that his description is spot-on.

“Wicked Knee,” says Martin, “is cathartic, heart-based and primarily intended for situations that invite people to let go, throw down, get down and have fun. And we add avant-garde interludes as release and tension.”

Martin came up with Wicked Knee’s unusual configuration because, he explains, “I have always wanted to work with brass and drums but never had the time or the nerve to make it happen. I knew I had it when I asked Steven to help me get a few players together for Life on Drums (Martin’s educational, anti-instructional DVD out on Vongole Films). I wanted to have some brass with a previously recorded drumbeat. That ended up in the film as ‘Muffaletta,’ a very short last performance. After finishing that project I realized this was my new band. I have listened to a lot of field recordings from all over the African continent and there are very powerful groups that use horns or wind and drums. That’s what got me excited initially.”

Prior to forming Wicked Knee, Martin had worked on several projects with Bernstein, who is highly respected within New York’s downtown scene and beyond, with his groups Sex Mob and the Millennial Territory Orchestra, and as a sideman with a long list of diverse artists ranging from Aretha Franklin and Sting to jazzmen Sam Rivers and Roswell Rudd. Martin had only performed a few times with Rojas—whose credits include his bands Spanish Fly and Les Miserables Brass Band, as well as gigs with Michael Jackson, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Queen Latifa and many others—mostly in live performances. Fowlkes, a longtime fixture on the New York scene, who has performed with the Lounge Lizards, the Jazz Passengers, Charlie Haden, John Zorn and others, was the perfect player to round out the lineup.

Of forming an ensemble with Martin, Bernstein notes, "Billy and I have been playing music together for 20 years...we have been talking about putting together a project for about 15 of those. Wicked Knee is a magical combination of musicians...taking the idea of a brass band to brand new places. Head music for your body."

The band name, Wicked Knee, was inspired, says Martin, “from a record compilation my wife’s friend had called Shake Your Wicked Knees. I borrowed that compilation, which is a collection of piano rags, blues and stomps, and I loved the vibe and the title. I like that it is born out of an Afro- American expression but has a slight surreal meaning. I like titles that can have multiple interpretations and keep that mysterious thing going.”

Of the six tracks on the EP, half are Martin-penned originals and the other three are covers. “El Ritmo,” which was written by Lee Collins, was the initial impetus behind Martin’s brainstorm to form a band with Bernstein. “Yasisa Bambuta” is a Congolese tune by Rosalie Diop, and “Am I Blue” is the old Ike and Tina Turner classic, presented on the EP in a full-length five-and-a-halfminute version and a shortened take lasting just over three minutes.

Of the original material, “Remington 411” originated, says Martin, “when I was experimenting with a bass clarinet quartet named Edmund Welles while I was 'Artist in Residence' last year at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, California. Then I further developed it at Camp MMW with a student ensemble. Finally, I worked it out during Wicked Knee’s recording session, adding DJ Olive on as an extra dimension for that ’70s detective TV theme vibe. ‘Remington 411’ came out of what I was reading at the time, Patti Smith’s Just Kids book. She had a Remington typewriter so it’s got a typewriter/gun-type affiliation.”

The under-two-minute “Cry” is another Martin composition. Martin first performed it with a bass clarinet quartet and then had Bernstein overdub trumpet; Martin also overdubbed his drums. The final original, “Congo March,” is brief at just over two minutes but packs a wallop, giving all four musicians a chance to blow furiously.

Although the sound of Wicked Knee bears little in common with Medeski Martin & Wood, Martin has no doubt that fans of the older group will be able to feel the groove. “In relation to my work with MMW, it’s really about balancing out everything I have done,” Martin says. “Wicked Knee is the antidote to MMW. I am more of a leader in this band and I want my own pure vision to come out with the help of these incredible individuals.

“Billy’s concept for the pocket brass band is open to myriad influences,” says Fowlkes. “From Congolese to avant-garde, Wicked Knee takes a fresh approach.”

“This is such a collective experience,” Martin adds. “I couldn’t do this as a solo artist. There is no electricity and no chordal instruments in this band. It’s the perfect balance to what MMW does. I would never want anything to get in the way of what I have with Medeski, Martin and Wood, but I think it is time to start something new. This is quite unique instrumentally and the four personalities really work together in a way that has never been done before, to my knowledge. When you realize you have a band where all the personalities define the whole, you need to get behind it and invest that energy fully. This is a real band.”

Caveman with Cyro Baptista
Caveman::
The stage is dark. Softly, sounds begin to emerge from the abyss. A metallic clatter, a dull thud, a whisper…the unrecognizable vibrations reflect the blackness that surrounds them. As if in imitation of music’s first days, the reverberations build faster and more intense, until at last, a pulse emerges. The evolution quickens as more layers enter, following the now driving beat. A warped organ, clanky guitar tones, a clicky drum pattern…the texture grows louder and more complex with each successive instrument, audibly straining to reach higher, to free itself from the darkness. Then, suddenly, sound and light erupt from the stage, blasting the audience with a raucous groove, rife with raw, primal energy.

Caveman doesn’t relent as the show continues. Even as organist Brian Marsella, bassist John Buck, guitarist John Lee, and drummer Tim Keiper reveal their jaw-dropping virtuosity through rowdy, up-tempo grooves, they never lose touch with the primitive simplicity at the center of their music. Though collectively these musicians have worked with Keller Williams, Cyro Baptista, Matisyahu, Marshall Allen, Pharoah’s Daughter, The Disco Biscuits, The Transmitters, and Vieux Farka Touré, it’s as if they look more to the fabled Neanderthal banging on rocks to inspire their music.

This devotion to the elemental has earned Caveman a maniacal following all over the United States. After two albums and four years of cris-crossing the country, this band has become a force to be reckoned with on the national festival and club circuit. Currently, Caveman is working on a new studio album and will be touring in its support later in 2011. Check them out this summer and get a taste of the primal!

Cyro Baptista & Beat the Donkey is a traveling circus of fun. The music is propelled by the thumping heartbeat of the two large surdos (Brazilian bass drums). Sprinkle in Baptista's wizardry on percussions - which include whistles, timbales, pots and pans, long plastic tubes whirled by the entire ensemble and other unusual self-made instruments - and what explodes on stage is an energetic, mesmerizing, virtuosic and more than engaging stage show.

Beat The Donkey is more than just a band. It is a multicultural, polyphonic, highly creative and entertaining group that takes rhythms beyond their natural frontiers and creates a brand of music too innovative and varied to be labeled.

The ensemble’s name, "Beat The Donkey", comes from the Brazilian expression "Pau Na Mula" meaning "Let’s go, let’s do it!"

There is an undeniable aura of fun and humor whenever Cyro Baptista takes the stage, and this is particularly true with Beat The Donkey. It is a wild, unstoppable and torrid world beat percussive ensemble that blends and beats a bewitching stage stew of untamed percussion, tap dance, martial arts, samba, jazz, rock and funk. They accomplish this by mixing instrumentation from all over the globe and unusual percussion inventions of Cyro’s own creation. The musicians hail from all over the world, wear wild, elaborate costumes and frequently leave their instruments to break into spontaneous dance, making the group fascinating to watch as well as listen to.

Cyro has always rejected rigid classifications in terms of instrumentation and compositional approach. With Beat The Donkey he gives free reign to his imagination, mixing instruments from Brazil, U.S., Indonesia and Africa with his own instruments. It is mysterious, spellbinding, infectious, irresistible dance music. Cyro himself roams the stage, conducting his troupe with fiendish glee, keeping the audience's attention captive for the whole show.

The amazing thing about Beat The Donkey is the unending variations; you could listen to them all night and still

Having a famous dad can be more of a curse than a blessing. For every Barry Bonds or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, both of whom overtook their fathers in the family business, there are thousands of sons who follow their dads with little success (Franz Xaver Mozart, anyone?). But Vieux Farka Touré, the son of the great Malian guitarist Ali Farka Touré, has already stepped out from his late father’s shadow. Ali Farka Touré proved – in case anyone ever doubted it – that the soul of the blues could be found in West Africa. His son Vieux is turning heads with a more radical idea: that those western Saharan roots can be heard in everything from the jam band scene to Jamaican dub.
